Lightning strikes are not new phenomena. They’ve been around since the earth’s formation, and the historians and chroniclers of the time documented some of the most notable incidents in history. They serve as a powerful reminder of nature’s immense power.
This article will discuss some of the most well-known lightning strikes in history and how we can apply lessons from long ago today.
No matter when a lightning strike was recorded, analysing its impact, severity and subsequent safety adjustments is still relevant. Lightning can still hit today just as in some of the cases we’re about to discuss. Let’s learn from them so we can be more prepared.
The most notable lightning strikes in history
Directly or indirectly, lightning strikes have undoubtedly caused colossal destruction, injury and loss of life throughout history. Hundreds of thousands more incidents will have escaped attention, not been recorded or lost to the annals of time.
That said, these lightning strikes – and their fallouts – were some of the most important in humankind’s history. The lessons we collectively learned from them shaped our modern lightning protection systems today.
One of history’s most interesting and relevant cases comes from the bell tower at St Mark’s Basilica in Venice, Italy. Its metal parts (which varied depending on which era and rebuild we’re talking about) combined with wood proved to attract lightning and then catch fire. One of the most well-known strikes came in 1489 when most of the tower was damaged and the entire top cone destroyed. Aside from 1489, lightning also struck St Mark’s nine more times between the 1380s and the 1760s. Only in 1776 was a lightning rod erected after Giuseppe Toaldo learned about the technique from Benjamin Franklin’s designs.
Then there was the tragic case of Luxembourg. In June 1807, lightning struck a gunpowder factory in the small European country. It exploded, and over 300 people lost their lives. It was one of the deadliest lightning strikes in history.
In more recent times, many remember the infamous New York Blackout of 1977. In July that year, a lightning strike on a power line triggered a huge, city-wide power cut. With all electrical power lost for 25 hours, things turned ugly, as looting, arson and general chaos became the order of the day.
How these incidents impacted lightning protection measures
In all these incidents – and the millions of others that have gone unmentioned – common factors influenced their severity. These included the following:
- Inadequate protection measures (such as lightning rods (terminals), defined pathways, grounding electrodes etc).
- Presence of conductive materials, channelling the electrical charge into damaging parts of the building.
- Large concentrations of people gathered together, leading to much greater devastation.
Partly due to some of these incidents, we’re now much more aware of the dangers of lighting. Modern times see much-improved lightning protection measures, including lightning rods, surge protectors, grounding electrodes, annual certified testing and other safety features.
They’ve also contributed to modern advancements in lightning protection technology. These include developing lightning detection systems (‘early warning systems’), modern weather predictions and analysis and using lightning mapping tools to track strike locations, frequencies and potential risk factors.
Collectively, these allow us to better protect ourselves and our infrastructure against Mother Nature, keeping everyone in our communities safe from lightning strikes.
What Lighting Protection Testing UK can do for you
Despite everything we’ve learned from history, one thing stands out to us: lightning remains unpredictable and potentially devastating. Even with all today’s knowledge and technological advancement, we’re still in the dark about what lightning and electricity truly are and the precise mechanisms of how the charges form and balance. We know how they work and how to take steps to protect ourselves, but as for our physical properties? That’s more of a ‘theoretical model’ than anything else.
Don’t let that fact scare you too much. We know how to handle lightning and reduce the risk to almost zero. Nevertheless, it highlights the respect everyone should afford lightning storms and the care that individuals, employers, managers and other community leaders should take for the safety of others and themselves.
That’s where we can help. Lightning Protection Testing UK is an experienced installer and tester of lightning protection systems. We combine decades of industry understanding and expertise into affordable solutions available to all.
